課程概述

Course Description:
This graduate seminar welcomes you to the profession by familiarizing you with the goals and mechanics of academic writing and research. Throughout the semester you will learn about recent scholarly debates in literary studies and understand the different genres and conventions of academic prose. You will master the main tricks of our trade: conducting original research, evaluating sources, using MLA citation style, editing prose for style and organization, writing annotated bibliographies, planning and outlining scholarly essays, etc. At the same time, our course readings and assignments will challenge you to think differently about literature and academic labor, asking you to grapple with how and why we do what we do as scholars. Ideally, you will end the semester a wiser, more curious, and confident academic well on your way to produce scholarship of the highest order.

 Course Objectives:
• Understand the conventions and genres of academic prose.
• Produce scholarly writing attentive to questions of argument, organization, and style.
• Gain familiarity with prominent journals in literary studies and critical theory.
• Formulate a research plan that includes asking productive questions about a proposed topic in literary studies.
• Locate and evaluate a variety of sources in traditional print and electronic formats, based on a research plan.
• Track and document sources using the MLA citation style (8th ed)
• Collaborate with peers in writing, discussion, and peer-review activities.

• Weekly reading assignments, to be completed before class meetings.
• Formal and informal writing assignments
• Additional assignments (documentation exercise, oral presentation, journal report)
